What’s new in Android 16 Beta 1

Google recently released the first beta version of Android 16, bringing new features and improvements that will soon arrive on Android devices. This version includes several functionalities focused on enhancing user experience, security, and compatibility across a wide range of devices.

“Live Updates” Notifications

One of Android 16’s highlights is the implementation of “Live Updates” notifications. Comparable to Apple’s “Live Activities,” this feature enables apps such as ride-hailing, food delivery, and navigation services to show real-time updates directly on the lock screen. Although it is currently limited to these categories, the expectation is that it will expand to other apps in the future.

ADAPTIVE
APPS

With the increased use of tablets and foldable devices, Android 16 emphasizes the importance of adaptable apps. Developers are encouraged to build apps that automatically adjust to different screen sizes and orientations, ensuring a consistent experience across all devices.

  • Starting in 2025, this requirement will apply to apps targeting API level 36 on devices with screen resolutions above 600 dpi, with an opt-out option.
  • The policy will expand to API level 37 in 2026, removing the opt-out possibility.
APV CODEC SUPPORT

Android 16 adds support for Advanced Professional Video (APV), a codec designed for high-definition video recording and professional editing. This codec offers features such as YUV 4:2:2 color sampling, 10-bit encoding, and bitrates of up to 2 Gbps, meeting the needs of video professionals who use Android devices.

Availability and Compatibility

At the moment, the Android 16 beta is available for devices in the Google Pixel family, ranging from the Pixel 6a to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as well as the Pixel Tablet. Android 16 is expected to be finalized and stable by the end of summer or the beginning of fall 2025.

With these updates, Android 16 aims to deliver a richer, safer, and more flexible user experience, meeting the demands of a diverse and constantly changing audience.
