Wear OS 7: more intelligence, better battery life, and more useful widgets on your wrist

Wear OS 7 brings a new chapter for Android smartwatches. With real-time information, a better connectivity to other devices, a longer battery life and additional capabilities powered by Gemini, Google is looking to make the watch more helpful in everyday life.

The update is already going out to eligible variants of the Pixel Watch, with support for the Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 2. The latest version is based on Android 17 and delivers apparent enhancements for users, and crucial changes for developers that develop applications for smartwatches.

Real time information on your wrist

Live Updates is one of the big new features in Wear OS 7. This function enables users follow live events on the watch without having to unlock their phone.

In reality, this might be used to check the status of a food delivery order, track a sports score, watch workout progress, or get pertinent notifications from an app. The premise is simple, give users rapid, contextual and easy to read information on their wrist.

This reinforces what actually makes a smartwatch helpful. Wear OS 7 doesn’t try to mimic everything from the smartphone. Instead, it concentrates on concise, meaningful and immediate information.

More control over connected devices

Wear OS 7 also enhances the watch’s interaction with the rest of the Android ecosystem. Google wants the smartwatch to be a rapid control centre for earbuds, speakers, smart screens and other connected devices.

The new features include a remote audio output option. With this feature, users may manage media playback and alter audio output right from the watch. For example, users will be able to stream audio from the phone to Bluetooth earphones or a suitable speaker without reaching for the smartphone.

9to5Google also states that Remote Media Routing is included into the system media player, but it’s not currently being used everywhere.

Gemini Intelligence will make the watch more personal

Another big milestone in Wear OS 7 will be Gemini integration. Google claims some gadgets will have Gemini Intelligence features later this year.

One anticipated feature is Create My Widget, which enables users build custom widgets using natural language. This implies that users will be able to ask the watch for a panel containing the information they care about most, without having to configure everything manually.

Gemini will also handle multi-step automations. Google offers examples such as arranging a spinning class or repeating a regular restaurant order. The idea is to make the watch into a more active assistant, capable of doing whole tasks from simple requests.

Widgets replace the traditional Tiles logic

Wear OS 7 modifies the way the watch displays rapid information. Traditional Tiles are now more flexible, dynamic widgets

The developer documentation says these new widgets are based on Jetpack Glance and RemoteCompose. The shift moves Wear OS farther into the broader Android ecosystem, making it easier to build more uniform experiences between phone and watch.

Widgets will be available in small and big card forms, in line with the 2×1 and 2×2 layouts on other Android devices. For users this means more helpful screens, more personalization and better adaption to the wrist.

Better battery life
for everyday use

Battery life is still one of the most crucial elements in any smart watch. Google says that upgrading watches from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7 can give you up to 10% more battery life.

That’s a boost from system-level optimizations. It’s not one single standalone feature, it’s a collection of efficiency gains designed to be used every day. This difference can enable customers who wear their watch for many hours to reach the end of the day with more life left.

Specific improvements for the Pixel Watch

There are a few changes in the June 2026 update for Pixel Watch that are significant. The Pixel Watch 4 has an improved Raise to Talk, with a more accurate and robust gesture model.

Emergency sharing is also more comprehensive. Now, the system includes things like Loss of Pulse Detection, Car Crash Detection and Fall Detection. If the option is activated, emergency contacts can be contacted automatically in case of an emergency.

The Wear Contacts app also gets updates, including a more modern appearance, Material 3 features, quick action buttons, and a bigger focus on contact photographs. The always-on display has also been tweaked: pressing the crown now brings up the app list directly, while rotating the crown lets you get to notifications or fast settings.

New features for developers

Wear OS 7 isn’t only an update for the users. Plus, Google has released a bunch of new tools for developers.

You can already test the Wear OS 7 Canary on an emulator based on Android 17. This means developers can have apps ready before the platform reaches more devices.
The AppFunctions API gives programs the ability to connect to assistants like Gemini. Google provides an example of how to start a run on Samsung Health with a voice command. This method diminishes the need for manual navigation and paves the way for more natural experiences on the watch.

Another new feature is the Wear workout monitor, a standard experience for fitness apps. This system incorporates the heart rate, music control and other important functionalities. The purpose is to decrease the technological labor needed to offer a nice exercise experience.

The same is true for Wear OS 1.6 Compose, ProtoLayout 1.4, Tiles 1.6, and Watch Face Format 5. This gives developers more possibilities for building modern apps, widgets and watch faces for Wear OS watches.

An update with an eye on real world use

Wear OS 7 is less concerned with cosmetic changes and more focused on meeting practical needs: quick access to information, better control of the device, longer battery life and more in-depth integration of AI.

The upgrade is already making tangible changes for owners of the Pixel Watch. Wear OS 7 is a better, more adaptable basis for the Android ecosystem and the years ahead.

Wear OS 7 with Live Updates, Gemini Intelligence, new widgets and higher energy economy makes Android smartwatches even more useful extensions of the phone, but with a clearer identity of their own.
